Enova Systems Inc. (ENA) is Driving for Growth

With headquarters in Torrance, California, Enova Systems Inc. is a supplier of efficient and environmentally friendly digital power components and systems products. As part of the Diversified Electronics industry, the company lists on the American Stock Exchange (AMEX). They began in 1976 as U.S. Electricar, Inc. and changed their name to Enova Systems, Inc. in 2000.

Enova focuses on the development of power management and conversion systems for mobile and stationary applications, which they then bring to market. Their technologies find use in alternative energy propulsion systems for light and heavy-duty vehicles. They also find use in power conditioning and management systems for distributed generation systems. Enova develops, designs, and manufactures drive systems and related component parts for electric, hybrid-electric, and fuel cell powered vehicles.

These systems offer Enova’s customers’ savings in fuel costs and aid in reducing noise and air pollution. Their HybridPower drive system consists of an enhanced electric motor and electronic controls that regulate the flow of electricity to and from the batteries at various voltages and power levels to propel vehicles. The system also includes a gear reduction/differential unit, which makes for the desired propulsion and performance needs of the user. The HybridPower drive system can be a “drop in” fully integrated turnkey solution for a customer, or a modular one for use as needed. The HybridPower electric motor can meet a user’s drive cycle requirements whether they use battery, fuel cell, or diesel generator or turbine power sources.

The company’s 90kW drive systems are suited to light duty electric and series hybrid-electric vehicles. Their 120kW drive systems are best for mid-sized buses, light trucks, and delivery vans that use electric and series hybrid-electric propulsion. Their 240kW drive system is best for large transport trucks and full-sized buses using electric and series hybrid-electric propulsion.

In May, Enova Systems Inc. announced the signing of a long-term supply agreement with school bus manufacturer IC Bus worth more than $120 million through 2010. The agreement guarantees that Enova’s proprietary electric drive system will be in IC Bus’ hybrid school buses in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The two companies are also working together to evaluate the hybrid bus market in India. IC Bus is a subsidiary of Navistar International Corp.
