OpenTV Corp. (NASDAQ:OPTV) today announced that the OpenTV Participate solution has been chosen by NBC Universal to power, centralize and manage cross-platform interactive television applications, including Web, mobile and set-top boxes for NBC Universal’s broadcast and cable networks.
OpenTV’s position as a leading provider of solutions for the delivery of advanced television and advanced advertising services is part of what attracted NBC to the company. Last year NBC.com used the OpenTV Participate solution to power its live, Web interactive services for the primetime series “Heroes”. NBC used OpenTV’s production tools to create, schedule, manage, analyze and synchronize the “Heroes” broadcast.
“Heroes” was broadcast every Monday night across the United States, allowing audiences the opportunity to interact with the program with live polls regarding the outcome of the storylines – all in real time.
“OpenTV Participate allows us to differentiate our programming and make it more engaging and fun for our viewers across all devices,” Jon Dakss, NBC Universal’s vice president of Interactive Media Product Development stated in the press release. “It’s an intuitive, easy-to-deploy solution that offers our viewers unique ways of getting more involved with their favorite shows and enables new interactive marketing opportunities for advertisers as well.”
For OpenTV, this is the opportunity for brand exposure and recognition in viewer participation television.

OpenTV’s Participate solution allows several thousand transactions per second in real time, giving viewers the chance to interact on any platform, such as cable, satellite, terrestrial, mobile or Web.
