Airspan Networks, Inc., the global wireless technology developer, announced Monday that it has been awarded a multi-year contract with Telenor, the Norwegian-based mobile communications provider, to expand their national IP network across Norway. Telenor wants to use Airspan’s WiMAX products to offer high-speed wireless data IP services to homes and businesses in rural areas previously unreached by broadband.
Airspan is seen as offering Telenor flexibility in range, capacity, and cost. Bjørn Netland, Director of Broadband Platforms for Telenor, commented, “We have enjoyed our ongoing relationship with Airspan and look forward to a continued and long-lasting partnership.”
Telenor is one of the fastest-growing providers of mobile communication services worldwide with more than 150 million mobile subscribers, and it is continuing to grow, particularly in Asia. Telenor is also the leading provider of television broadcasting services to the Nordic region. The company has ownership in 12 mobile operators across Europe and Asia, creating a geographical footprint that covers 650 million people.
Airspan has been a leading supplier of wireless solutions since 1992, and now serves customers in more than 100 countries by emphasizing long-term partnerships with clients. Airspan views wireless, including Wi-Fi and the more recent WiMAX standards, as far more than just an option in the absence of wired solutions, and sees wireless as attractive in its own right, solving problems that alternatives cannot.
Airspan products allow communication service providers, ISP services, and other telecommunication users to have high-speed data and voice capability using radio frequencies rather than wires. The company’s systems can be deployed rapidly and cost effectively, providing wide-area coverage along with security and fade-resistance without copper wire, cable, or fiber optic networks. Products also include software tools for network management. In addition, Airspan does network installation, training, and support.
