Satcon Technology Corp., a leading provider of power solutions for the renewable energy market, has announced that the company’s PowerGate Plus 500 kW solar PV inverters are fully operational at First Light in Canada. First light is Canada’s largest solar farm and was developed through a joint venture between SunEdison and SkyPower. The first installation included the implementation of PowerGate Plus throughout 90 acres of land in Stone Mills, Ontario. This project is expected to generate more than 10 million kilowatt hours (kWhs), enough electricity to power almost 1,000 homes in its first year of operation.
Under the terms of this agreement, Satcon supplied 18 PowerGate Plus 500 kW inverters. PowerGate plus is the industry’s most proven large scale solar PV power conversion technology solution. This product has delivered over 170 megawatts to businesses and consumers alike since 2005.
The selection of the PowerGate 500 kW for First Light is an example of how Satcon is poised to grow just as modern solar PV farms continue to grow in size and complexity. Satcon’s other utility grade solutions include: Prism, a 1 megawatt medium voltage platform, and Solstice, the the industry’s first complete power harvesting and management solution for utility class solar power plants. Prism and Solstice, along with the PowerGate 1 megawatt and 500 kW solutions, give Satcon the most complete set of utility ready products in the industry.
Carllos Domenech, SunEdision Chief Operating Officer, stated, “The First Light Solar Park is the largest system deployed under Ontario’s RESOP and is a significant step in the growth of utility scale solar power generation in North America. Producing reliable large scale solar power in the challenging Ontario climate presented design challenges to our project team. Satcon brought the expertise and the proven inverter technologies to help us achieve the performance and quality required to deliver stable and reliable solar power.”
Steve Rhoades, President and CEO of Satcon, added, “First Light further demonstrates the growing adoption of large scale solar installations in North America and the increased demand for advanced feature, utility grade solutions. We have worked closely with both SunEdison and SkyPower to develop a total system solution that delivers the highest levels of performance and reliability designed for the challenging Canadian environment. With First Light, we continue to set the standard for large scale solar power production in North America.”
