RealNetworks, Inc. (RNWK) Doubles Syndication Partners by Acquiring Macrovisions’ Trymedia

Digital entertainment company RealNetworks (RNWK) is doubling its syndication partners thanks to acquiring substantially all of the assets of casual gaming company Trymedia from Macrovision. RealNetworks announced Friday that the acquisition is part of its strategy to build reach through partnerships.

The announcement comes on the heels of its strategic partnership with Amsterdam-based The Spill Group earlier this month. In addition, the Seattle-based RealNetworks announced its acquisition of Game Trust last year.

Trymedia provides syndication that enables portals, online retailers and game developers to securely distribute PC games through physical and digital channels. The subsidiary of Santa Clara, Calif.-based Macrovision boasts 250 partners, including AOL, Yahoo!, Telstra, IGN and T-Online.

“Trymedia has been a leader in the digital distribution space, so together we have a full portfolio of syndication services that we can offer partners,” said Harold Zeitz, senior vice president of RealGames.

RealNetworks did not disclose financial terms of the transaction. However, Reuters, citing a person with knowledge of the deal, reports it to be $4 million. The deal is expected to close later this quarter.

Shares of RealNetworks were up 8 cents at $5.95 during Friday’s trading.
