Optibase (OBAS) Overhauls Airport Communications

Optibase Ltd. (NASDAQ: OBAS) proved itself an up-and-coming contender in the video solutions industry last week after it announced its latest multi-platform project at Vancouver International Airport in Vancouver, Canada.According to the press release, the company installed its H.264 IPTV MPEG encoding module at the airport to stream TV channels and airport announcements to the plasma-screen monitors located throughout the airport’s terminals.

As a major international gateway between North America and Asia and the second busiest airport in Canada, Vancouver International Airport experiences an impressive number of visitors every year – in fact, the airport fully expects to serve 17.5 passengers in 2007. With such a large amount of visitors, the airport needs an up-to-date communications system for its growing information demands.

“With growing numbers of passengers expected this year and beyond, we are always on the lookout for new ways to make their travel experience more pleasant,” Kevin Molloy, vice president and simplified passenger travel/chief information officer at Vancouver International Airport, said in the release. “Optibase was the obvious selection to achieve this goal. Their advanced IPTV platforms deliver broadcast-quality video, enabling us to continue to expand and adapt to meet the needs of our travelers.”

It comes as little surprise that Optibase was selected. The company has a long history of proving top-notch video solutions, specializing in streaming gateways and MPEG encoders and decoders for financial institutions, police departments, traffic agencies, private businesses, and even military and government installations.

Adam Schadle, Optibase’s president, was very happy that his company had been selected for this ambitious project.

“We are very pleased to be selected for this project,” Schadle said. “The Vancouver Airport project is a testament to the versatility of Optibase’s [Messaging Gateway] product line.”

Share prices for Optibase were up 1.13 percent this morning, climbing from an opening price of $4.42 a share to $4.46 a share by 9:30 a.m. CDT.
