Level 3 Communications Inc. (LVLT) Chosen to Deliver Capacity Upgrade to University of Wisconsin System’s Research and Education Network

Level 3 Communications Inc. is a leading global provider of fiber-based communications systems. The company offers metro and long-haul services, including transport, data, Internet, content delivery and voice, to a variety of customers.

Level 3 today announced that it has been chosen to deliver a 10-fold capacity upgrade to WiscNet, the University of Wisconsin System’s Research and Education Network. WiscNet is a non-profit association comprised of members in public and private organizations that focus on worldwide information and computing resources for education, research and public service.

WiscNet’s members include most of Wisconsin’s colleges and universities, about 75 percent of the state’s K12 school districts, as well as libraries, local and municipal governments, hospitals and other entities. As the association continues to expand, the need for additional support and networking capabilities is heightened.

“We turned to Level 3 for its cost-efficient, reliable IP services that will continue to allow us to grow and scale WiscNet,” Mike Schlicht of the University of Wisconsin System stated in the press release. “The dramatic increase in capacity will allow further information and resource sharing among education organizations, which are key pillars of WiscNet.”

Jeff Tench, president of Level 3’s Business Markets Group, notes that the agreement validates Level 3’s commitment to its customers and its flexibility to meet their needs.

“This expanded relationship with the University of Wisconsin System is a prime example of the trust Level 3 builds with its customers,” Tench stated. “This upgrade is a testament to the scalability of Level 3’s network and the services we deliver to enterprise customers.”
