Hearst-Argyle Television, Inc. (HTV), based out of New York, New York, owns 26 television stations, and manages an additional three television and two radio stations owned by Hearst Corporation. The company’s television stations reach approximately 18% of U.S. households. Hearst-Argyle is the largest ABC affiliate group and the second-largest NBC affiliate owner. The company also owns more than 30 Web sites and currently multicasts 18 digital weather channels.
The company has received numerous awards in 2008 for its local news coverage. WTAE-TV, an affiliate out of Pittsburgh, received a national George Foster Peabody Award for its investigation of spending practices at Pennsylvania’s state-run student loan agency. The investigation also earned the Investigative Reporters and Editors (IRE) Medal, the highest national honor specifically for investigative reporting, and a National Headliner Award.
In addition, WBAL-AM in Baltimore earned an Edward R. Murrow Award for Overall Excellence. The station also received six other regional Murrows, more than any single radio station in its region. Other Overall Excellence honorees in their regions of the Murrow Awards were KMBC-TV in Kansas City, WCVB-TV in Boston, KETV in Omaha, and WYFF-TV in Greenville. WYFF-TV also received the 2008 National Association of Broadcasters Education Foundation Service to America Television Award.
