FuelCell Energy, Inc. (FCEL) Reports Sale of a Power Plant to Be Installed at London Office Tower

FuelCell Energy is a global leader in the design, manufacture, operation, and service of ultra-clean, efficient, and reliable fuel cell power plants. The company’s power plants are generating clean power at more than 50 sites around the globe. It has approximately 300 megawatts of power generation capacity installed worldwide or in backlog.

The company announced today that its German subsidiary, FuelCell Energy Solutions GmbH (FCES), will manufacture and install a stationary fuel cell power plant at the 20 Fenchurch office development in London, England, being built by the Canary Wharf Group. The ultra-clean and efficient power plant will facilitate clean air permitting and support London’s carbon reduction targets. FCES will also operate and maintain the power plant.

The quiet operation and virtual lack of pollutants from fuel cells is ideally suited for populated areas such as London. The power generation process of the fuel cell uses an electrochemical reaction rather than combustion of hydrocarbons, which very effectively converts fuel into clean electricity and heat suitable for generating steam. The electrochemical power generation process is also quiet and free of vibrations.

Fuel cells of this type can generate up to 90% efficiency. The heat for this particular fuel cell installation will be used for facility heating and cooling, resulting in an estimated overall efficiency above 85%. The power plant will be installed in 2013 and be ready for the building completion in 2014.
