Entropic (ENTR) Introduces New HTML5-Capable Set-Top Box Platform

On August 6, during the CableLabs Summer Conference 2012, Entropic Communications, Inc. announced  the introduction of the company’s new set-top box (STB) platform, which will be compatible with MoCA (Multimedia over Coaxial) 2.0 networks. The new set-top boxes will be compatible with HTML5 applications.

Entropic Communications is focused on developing home entertainment set-top boxes and systems on a chip technology for use in the cable industry. Entropic offers cable companies solutions for streaming HDTV broadcasts and streaming video throughout homes.

In addition to being able to run HTML5-based entertainment apps, the company’s new STB platform will be open-source, with dual-core ARM mobile processors and NEON technology. During the CableLabs Summer Conference, Entropic demonstrated a simulated home cable environment that included such features as MoCA 2.0 and 1.0 interoperability for homes with older equipment, combined MoCA and WiFi technology to facilitate streaming content, and streaming that utilizes real-time transcoding for distributing in-home video from the STB to tablets, smartphones and PCs.

Anton Monk, co-founder and vice president of Technology at Entropic Communications, said, “The transition from QAM- to IP-based cable systems requires a flexible end-to-end platform that can immediately take advantage of industry standards, and then distribute the content securely and reliably over the fastest in-home network. As the only pure-play platform semiconductor company in connected home entertainment we are fully focused on empowering cable operators to deliver, and consumers to enjoy, next-gen apps over their cable service with our SoC and MoCA silicon solutions.”
