Standard Microsystems Corp. (SMSC) is a semiconductor company which specializes in the design and sale of hardware devices implemented on semiconductor chips. Headquartered in Hauppauge, New York, they list on the NASDAQ as part of the Semiconductor-Integrated Circuits industry. Incorporated in 1971, the company’s initial public offering was in November of 1980.

Their semiconductor products provide connectivity, networking, or embedded control solutions to serve a variety of markets. These include the consumer electronics, automotive infotainment, computing, industrial, and high-speed communications markets. Standard Microsystems develops semi-custom, application specific, and standard products that allow their customers to access or transfer their digital assets with convenience and speed.

The company provides analog/mixed signal solutions to leading original equipment manufacturers (OEM’s) and original design manufacturers (ODM’s). Their products utilize one or more technologies. These include Ethernet, ARCNET, MOST®, and Hi-Speed USB. They can also include various analog sensors and transceivers.

Standard Microsystems is a key supplier of semiconductors to companies like Toshiba, Sony, Lucent, Panasonic, Samsung, Sharp, Siemens, and Thomson. They also supply semiconductors to automobile manufacturers such as Audi, BMW, Land Rover, Daimler, Porsche, Saab, and Volvo. In the Personal Computing industry, their customers include Dell, Hewlett-Packard, Lenovo, NEC, Intel, AMD, Fujitsu, Asus, Quanta, Compal, among others.

The company outsources to foundries in Singapore, Taiwan, and Korea for the manufacturing of their semiconductors. Their product lines include USB 2.0 hubs and mass storage devices; embedded controllers and their companion devices; as well as Ethernet and embedded networking devices. They also market networking co-processors and in-vehicle interface controllers designed deliver high bandwidth entertainment and navigation content.
